Have you ever looked at an ant and thought, wow this creature could really teach me something about building wealth? The next time your kitchen countertops are covered with ants that are carrying food (up to 20 times their body weight) towards their nest, consider giving them a standing ovation. As tiny as their brains are, they somehow figured out something that many of us haven’t—the importance of saving. Just think about it… how many times have you seen an ant distracted with anything when they are carrying their treasure to their nest? They are always marching diligently in a focused, orderly line towards their destination, no matter what the circumstances are. You also never find them wearing anything too fancy. It’s always the same outfit with the same old boring antennas on their head, with no highlights or extensions. No, they are not worried about what’s trending. All they care about is storing up their nest for a rainy day.
3 Tips to Becoming as Wise as an Ant
Tip #1: Instead of trying to carry 20 times your weight, you could work on saving 20 percent of your income for retirement, emergency funds, and paying down debt. If that is not realistic for you at the moment, figure out what is and do your best to stick to it.
Tip # 2: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?" (Luke 14:28)
Take a moment to create a budget. This is a critical step towards financial security.
Tip #3: Give with a cheerful heart. Whenever the food supply is low, ants quickly spread food to other ants that live within their same nest. You may be thinking… wait a minute! Shouldn’t I keep all of my money in order gain wealth? Not necessarily. Wealth is not always measured in dollars and cents, but your overall happiness. There are plenty of benefits of giving. However, try to keep in mind that, “you must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves a person who gives cheerfully” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
I hope that the 3 tips provided will be helpful, and that moving forward you’ll think twice before you choose to underestimate an ant.
